Ron’s Farewell Event: THE LADY EVE

Ron Kopp, the Paramount’s Film Programmer for the past 6-and-a-half years, will be leaving the theater on October 1st to set off on some new adventures.  Before he goes, though, he wanted to share one last film with his friends and neighbors.  After much ponderation, he finally decided on THE LADY EVE, one of the most brilliant comedies of the screwball era.  Written and directed by Preston Sturges, it stars Henry Fonda and Barbara Stanwyck (who, not coincidentally, happens to be Ron’s favorite actress).  These two meet on a cruise ship.  He’s an ophiologist (“a zoologist specializing in snakes” to you laymen).  More importantly, he’s also heir to the Pike Brewery fortune (even though, as he says, he doesn’t like beer, bock beer, lager beer or steam beer, nor pale ale, brown ale, nut brown ale, porter or stout, which makes him want to ulp just to think about it).  As it happens, she’s a con artist working the high seas with her father.  Hopsie’s a ridiculously easy mark for a professional like Jean, but his very gullibility leads to some magical complications.  Help us celebrate the Paramount’s long and rich history of programming truly great movies by joining us on this special evening.
